Magazine Cover

Overview

You will be creating a magazine cover for your spreads you just created. The cover will be designed in InDesign, but elements can be created in Photoshop or Illustrator and synced in InDesign. You will be creating this on the first page of your spreads.

 

Objective - What is the problem I need to solve?

  • How will I use typography to create an impactful cover that incorporates hierarchy?

  • How will I use contrast in my typography?

  • How will I use design elements to make a realistic cover?

 

Project Requirements

  • Title

  • Highlight your article as the main article

  • Additional articles (you make these up)

  • Bar code

  • Issue date

  • If you are creating a real magazine, you need to ensure your title is the exact replica of the real magazine.​

Step 1: Brainstorming Steps

  1. Create a new folder inside your Final folder and name it “Cover”.

  2. Create a new Google Doc inside your project folder and copy and paste the Magazine Cover Creative Brief into this new doc.

  3. Fill out the top of the Creative Brief and title it by clicking on Untitled Document. 

  4. Complete the Creative Brief brainstorming steps.

 

Step 2: Project Steps

  1. Open your past spread and rename it by going to Save A Copy. 

  2. Rename it LastName_Cover.indd.”

  3. Start to layout

 

Step 3: Turn In Directions

1. Save your InDesign file as “lastName_Cover”.

2. Export your file as a JPG by going to File>Export and changing the format to JPG. 

  • Quality: High

  • Resolution: 300

  • Color Space: RGB

3. Complete the self-evaluation and grading on the rubric. 

4. Complete and submit the checklist in Schoology.

Magazine Layout

Overview

You will be creating a four-page magazine spread of the topic of your choice. The first spread (page 1-2) will be a full photo page and the second spread will be an article and photos. 

 

Objective - What is the problem I need to solve?

  • How will I create a well-designed and nicely flowing mulit-page magazine layout. 

  • How will I ensure I am using columns, guides and margins successfully?

  • How can I include magazine elements like captions, pull quotes, etc. successfully?

 

Project Requirements

  • An article is found online and the author is properly credited

  • Large-resolution images are used throughout

  • Layout skills are demonstrated

  • ​

First Spread: Full photo, Headline, & Author Credits
Second Spread: Two pages of article and at least four photos

  1. Create a five page document that are 8.5x11

  2. Start with 4 columns however you will change this according to your design. 

  3. Start your design on page 2.

1. Save your AI file as “lastName_Magazine”.

2. Export your file as a JPG by going to File>Export and changing the format to JPG. ​

  • Quality: High

  • Resolution: 300

  • Color Space: RGB

3.Complete the self-evaluation and grading on the rubric.

Calendar

Overview

You will be creating a calendar for just one month to create a class calendar for the next year. Your month should be represented clearly by using elements that speak to the months and are created by you. Use inspiration from Smashing Magazine if need be.

 

Objective - What is the problem I need to solve?

  • How will I use visual identity to speak to the destination?

  • How will I incorporate other design skills with InDesign?

 

Project Requirements

  • The correct dates are used

  • Guides are used correctly 

  • Your design accurately reflects the month

 

Project Extension 

Smashing Magazine looks for calendar submissions each month from around the world. Some of you may move through your designs quickly, which you will have the opportunity to submit your calendar design into their contest and to be downloaded around the world. 

 

Wallpaper Guidelines

Step 1: Brainstorming Steps

  1. Create a new folder inside your Final folder and name it “Calendar”.

  2. Create a new Google Doc inside your project folder and copy and paste the Calendar Creative Brief into this new doc.

  3. Fill out the top of the Creative Brief and title it by clicking on Untitled Document. 

  4. Complete the Creative Brief brainstorming steps.

 

Step 2: Project Steps

  1. Create a one page document at 11x17”. 

  2. Once you create the document, you will need to adjust columns, margins, gutters and or guides to successfully lay out your design. 

  3. Use Illustrator or Photoshop to create your design elements and begin to lay out your design in InDesign.

 

Step 3: Turn In Directions

1. Save your AI file as “lastName_Calendar”.

2. Export your file as a JPG by going to File>Export and changing the format to JPG. ​

  • Quality: High

  • Resolution: 300

Postcard

Overview

You will be creating a two sided postcard design to promote a destination of your choice. The front will represent a location and the back will be set up to include a place for someone to write a message and the address. Push yourself to use your layout skills and creativity in order to create your postcard.

 

Objective - What is the problem I need to solve?

  • How will I use visual identity to speak to the destination?

  • How will I incorporate other design skills with InDesign?

 

Project Requirements

  • Two pages were created

  • Backside needs to leave at least 3” on the right for an area where the address will go.

  • You use visual identity to represent your location.

 

Step 1: Brainstorming Steps

  1. Create a new folder inside your Final folder and name it “Postcard”.

  2. Create a new Google Doc inside your project folder and copy and paste the Postcard Creative Brief into this new doc.

  3. Fill out the top of the Creative Brief and title it by clicking on Untitled Document. 

  4. Complete the Creative Brief brainstorming steps.

 

Step 2: Project Steps

  1. Create a two page document at 5x7” 

  2. Start designing

 

Step 3: Turn In Directions

1. Save your AI file as “lastName_Postcard”.

2. Export your file as a JPG by going to File>Export and changing the format to JPG.

Graphic Design Flyer

Overview

You will research a graphic design profession for this project and then create a flyer promoting or explaining that profession. You may use Photoshop or Illustrator to create images, but the flyer must be laid out in InDesign. You will present these flyers to the class at the end of the project. If you are not prepared to present, you will lose 5% from your project grade. Stay focused and on track with this project!

 

Objective - What is the problem I need to solve?

  • How can I apply my previous design knowledge to this new software?

  • How will I grow my understanding of InDesign during these tutorials?

  • How will I incorporate columns/margins successfully?

  • How will I learn more about a graphic design profession?

 

Project Requirements

  • Columns/margins are used. They will be determined by your design, but must be set up correctly and used correctly. How many columns of type will you need?

  • Hyphens are turned off

 

Step 1: Brainstorming Steps

  1. Create a new folder inside your Final folder and name it “Flyer”.

  2. Create a new Google Doc inside your project folder and copy and paste the Flyer Creative Brief into this new doc.

  3. Fill out the top of the Creative Brief and title it by clicking on Untitled Document. 

  4. Complete the Creative Brief brainstorming steps.

 

Step 2: Project Steps

  1. Create a 8.5x11 inch InDesign file. 

  2. Decide on how many columns you will be using. Remember you can change this during your design process too.

  3. Embed all images brought into InDesign.

 

Step 3: Turn In Directions

1. Save your AI file as “lastName_Flyer.ai”.

2. Export your file as a JPG by going to File>Export and changing the format to JPG. 

  • Export All Pages

  • Quality: High

  • Resolution: 300

  • Color Space: RGB

3.Complete the self-evaluation and grading on the rubric. 

4. Complete and submit the checklist in Schoology.
